The design of these drills is based on observations of students who became proficient
at adding and subtracting when
they saw how the three numbers in an addition/subtraction
statement were related
to each other — for instance, when they saw that 2, 3, and
5 are related by 2 + 3 = 5 and
5 – 2 = 3 and 5 – 3 = 2. The same thing was true
for multiplying and dividing. Proficiency came once they saw the relationships between
statements such as 5 × 2 = 10 and 10 ÷ 5 = 2.
