Reading

From the initial task of connecting symbols with their sounds to the ultimate achievement of analyzing a narrative, we provide materials to stimulate and challenge students of any age.  To explore our reading education materials, click on the topic you want in this flowchart:

The embodiment of our philosophy of reading education is Dr. Phyllis  Fischer’s Concept Phonics, an amazingly efficient, effective program for teaching reading/decoding and spelling skills, which differs from other phonics programs in ways that achieve truly remarkable power and speed.

Our publications continue through the controlled-vocabulary readers and workbooks of Stories from Somerville and the Say, Read, & Spell worksheets for independent work on reading and spelling.

As students begin to read more easily, our controlled-vocabulary chapter books will enliven their interest while they focus on particular families of words, which can be teacher-reinforced using the word lists and notes at the back of each book.

Making Handwriting Flow helps handwriting become automatic.  This develops consistent mental images of the letters and enhances orthographic recognition, making spelling more fluent and natural.

We believe that both children and adults have the right to be taught literacy skills. These basic skills should be taught quickly and efficiently, using strategies that make learning as independent as possible, so that children may learn these skills along with their peers in an age-appropriate setting.

“Dr. Phyllis Fischer [has] a wealth of knowledge about early reading acquisition and years of successful experience in teaching.... She has developed theoretically sound, clinically proven materials to train children in an intelligently sequenced and orderly fashion in the skills basic to the reading process.”
