Stories from Somerville

The 75 stories in the Stories from Somerville readers were written by Kim Ramsey, a talented K-8 resource room teacher with a flair for storytelling.  She used each story, along with some worksheets, as the basis of a week of work on decoding, spelling, and comprehen- sion.  We have published them in a somewhat more flexible format.  The original stories and comprehension exercises for them are in this Stories from Somerville set.  The decoding and spelling exercises appear in our Say, Read, & Spell worksheets, which match up, story by story, with the skills covered in these readers but can also be used independently.

The stories in these books are not about real people, but they reflect typical experiences of real children and describe common social interactions among children. They were originally developed for a group of elementary school children with reading disabilities.  Some also had behavioral difficulties or came from families who acted out anger inappropriately.  In several stories, some characters behave inappropriately.  This gives students a chance to see what their behavior looks like to others.  It provides a non-personal, yet realistic setting that children can relate to while they read and discuss the stories.

Book 1 focuses on one-syllable words, including their use with common suffixes.  It begins with the simplest CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.  Each story introduces a new skill or pattern.  $19.95

Book 2 emphasizes two-syllable word structures, including suffixes, along with the one-syllable words and suffixes from Book 1.   Most stories introduce new skills or
patterns; a few just provide practice with the skills or patterns from the previous story.
$19.95

In both books, above the title of each story is a list of at least ten words that typify the skill or pattern introduced in that story.  The Table of Contents includes the skills added in each story and the sight words necessary for that story.  The sequence of the
skills introduced in the stories is close to the sequence used in
Concept Phonics.  It is also very close to the sequences of many Orton-Gillingham-based reading programs.
